The Four Major Types of Gaskets

Mar 14, 2026

Metal Gaskets:
When a piping system enters "Hell Mode"-facing extreme conditions-metal gaskets step into the spotlight. Typically crafted from materials such as stainless steel or copper, these gaskets act like armored warriors, standing firm against the most hostile environments:

Serrated Gaskets: Featuring a surface of concentric ridges, these gaskets "bite" into the flange face, making them ideal for scenarios involving severe temperature fluctuations.

Ring-Type Joints (RTJs): With an oval cross-section design, these gaskets are the ultimate remedy for any high-pressure sealing challenge.

Corrugated Gaskets: Their resilient, wave-like structure effortlessly absorbs mechanical vibrations-a favorite choice in oil refineries.

Semi-Metallic Gaskets:
When operating conditions demand a gasket that is both "tough and flexible," semi-metallic gaskets rise to the occasion. They ingeniously combine a metal skeleton with a non-metallic filler layer:

Spiral-Wound Gaskets: Formed by spirally winding alternating strips of metal and non-metal materials, offering both high compressive strength and excellent sealing performance.

Jacketed Gaskets: A non-metallic core (such as graphite) is encased within a metal jacket, creating a distinct, layered structure akin to a sandwich.

Corrugated-Serrated Gaskets: A metal core with serrated faces is bonded to a soft coating, providing a dual layer of protection for enhanced reliability.

Non-Metallic Gaskets:
When facing corrosive media or low-temperature environments, non-metallic gaskets-such as those made from rubber or graphite-demonstrate their unique advantages:

Rubber Gaskets: Possessing exceptional elasticity, they serve as the "silent experts" of water piping systems.

Graphite Gaskets: Highly resistant to acid and alkali corrosion, acting as an "invisible shield" for chemical processing equipment.

PTFE (Teflon) Gaskets: Boasting extreme chemical inertness, they remain impervious even to highly concentrated acids.

Specialty Gaskets: The "Transformers" for Tricky Conditions
Certain unique scenarios demand customized solutions; thus, these specialized gaskets-the "star students" of the gasket world-were born:

Lens Gaskets: Featuring a spherical contact surface, these gaskets are specifically designed to resolve issues caused by pipe misalignment (eccentricity).

Spring Gaskets: Equipped with built-in elastic elements, they effectively compensate for thermal expansion and contraction within the piping system.

Jacketed/Clad Gaskets: A metal outer frame encases and protects the inner, more brittle sealing material, thereby significantly extending the gasket's service life.
